Japan and the International Bioethics Committee (IBC)
Japan is currently a member of the International Bioethics Committee (IBC), a body of 36 independent experts that follows progress in the life sciences and its applications in order to ensure respect for human dignity and freedom, created in 1993.
In 2005, the International Bioethics Committee of UNESCO (IBC) held its 12th session in Tokyo, Japan. It was the first time that the thirty-six IBC experts met in Asia, and also the first meeting since the adoption, on 19 October 2005, of the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights by the Member States of UNESCO.
The main items on the agenda were the implementation of the principles contained in the Declaration and the current events in the field of bioethics.
The meeting was organized with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and the Japanese National Commission for UNESCO, in partnership with Sophia University, Tokyo.
