The International Hydrological Programme (IHP) of UNESCO is an intergovernmental programme for scientific cooperation dealing with water resources.
It aims at deepening scientific and technological knowledge on water with a view to preserving the environment and improving water management systems while taking into account economic and social needs and constraints (More on IHP on the UNESCO website).
Japan is currently an elected member of the Intergovernmental Council of IHP, organ in charge of planning and supervising the implementation of the International Hydrological Progamme.
Japan contributes to IHP through research on the management and balance of water resources, the consequences of climate changes and human activities (Source: Ministry of the Environnement of Japan ).
Japan has also contributed to the establishment of the "International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management under the auspices of UNESCO" (ICHARM). The Centre opened on 6 March 2006 and co-operates with IHP programmes and activities related to water hazard and risk management. (More on ICHARM)
IHP's activities are implemented by a national committee or focal point in each country. For Japan:
