23 - 26 April 2024: Japan Trust Fund Annual Review Meeting

The Annual Review Meeting of the Japan Trust Fund is held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, from April 23 to 26, 2024, between the Government of Japan and the UNESCO Secretariat, both in person and online. On the first day of the meeting, the plenary meeting was held on the 23rd, with the Japanese side led by Ambassador KANO Takehiro and participated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC).
This meeting is held every year for the purpose of confirming to the UNESCO Secretariat as a donor (contributor) the implementation status of the funds contributed by Japan.
The meeting was attended by Ms. Zazie SCHAFER, Director of the Bureau of Strategic Planning of UNESCO, and the Assistant Director-Generals of the Education Sector, Social and Human Sciences Sector, Communication and Information Sector, and Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission for UNESCO, as well as the Directors of the Bureau of Human Resources Management, Culture and Emergencies Entity and Division of Water Sciences. In addition to expressing appreciation for Japan's contribution, UNESCO explained the status of the programs implemented by UNESCO based on Japan's support, including the Japan Trust Fund.
In response, Japan explained that it would continue to support UNESCO's efforts in the six priority areas of “Protection of all forms of heritage”, “Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)”, “Disaster Risk Reduction”, “UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development”, “Emerging Technology(AI, neurotechnology)”, “Promotion of MONDIACULT 2022 declaration” The participants also discussed administrative and financial issues to ensure the smooth implementation of UNESCO's initiatives.
From the 24th to the 26th, we will exchange views on the implementation of individual programs supported by Japan with the Secretariat Headquarters and UNESCO field offices that are working in the field.
