On 13 September, Ambassador KANO Takehiro participated in an event entitled "Celebrating a Century of Intellectual Cooperation: from legacy to future action", held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, to highlight the importance of preserving UNESCO's archives.
The UNESCO Archives contain a large number of valuable documents testifying to the various activities of UNESCO and its predecessor, the International Institute for Intellectual Cooperation (IIIC), over the past century, with the aim of promoting peace through intellectual cooperation across national boundaries. However, the deteriorating state of preservation of these documents, particularly due to obsolete facilities, has become a challenge to take on.
From 2017 to 2020, Japan supported a project to digitize the archives. This time, Japan has contributed to an Exhibition entitled ("Towards the Formation of a Universal Conscience: The International Institute for Intellectual Cooperation, 100 Years"), which showcased some of the project's achievements. In his presentation of the Exhibition in Room 1, the main venue of the event, and in front of a large audience, including many Ambassadors, Ambassador Kano underlined the importance of preserving UNESCO's archives and the need to support the projects aiming at contributing to it.
The event included two panel discussions with experts in the field of archives preservation as well as a projection of films restored with the support of France. The event ended with the presentation of a summary of key points which, among other things, underlined the need to support projects aimed at the preserving UNESCO archives.
