28 October 2024: Japan's Support to South Sudan through a partnership with UNESCO

On 28 October in Juba, South Sudan, His Excellency Mr. ODAGIRI Toshio, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to South Sudan, and Mr. Julius BANDA, Head of Office & UNESCO Representative to South Sudan, signed a Memorandom of understanding and exchanged notes for a Grant Aid in the framework of the “Project for the Development of Mass Media to Improve Access to Information for Elections and Post-elections” (project of up to 396 million yen).
The objective of the project is to ensure that future elections in South Sudan will be fair and just. To this end, it will support the development of regional and community radio stations as well as capacity building for the media and security officials through UNESCO, in order to increase public's access to reliable information and to strengthen the media’s capacity to disseminate information. The project is expected to contribute to the holding of fair and impartial elections, the consolidation of democracy, and long-term peace and stability in the country.
His Excellency Mr. KANO Takehiro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Permanent Delegate of Japan to UNESCO, and Mr. Tawfik JELASSI, Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, UNESCO, participated online in the signing Ceremony and exchange of notes from UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.
Ambassador Kano said that UNESCO was playing a leading role in supporting mass media and expressed the wish that Japan-UNESCO cooperation would provide an opportunity for the consolidation of democracy and sustainable development in South Sudan.
