7 April 2025: Side event during the 221st session of the Executive Board "UNESCO's Support on Building Resilience and Advancing Early Warning Systems"

     On 7 April, a side event during the 221st session of the Executive Board entitled "UNESCO's Support on Building Resilience and Advancing Early Warning Systems" was held at UNESCO Headquarters with the aim of strengthening UNESCO's efforts in the field of disaster management.
 
     The event, held in margin of the current session of the Executive Board of UNESCO, started with remarks by the co-organisers (Ms Lidia Arthur Brito, Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences of UNESCO, Ambassador Takehiro Kano and H.E. Ms Jiřina Valentová, Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of the Czech Republic to UNESCO), followed by a presentation provided by H.E. Ms Nathalie Rossette-Cazel, Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of the Cook Islands to UNESCO and other experts, on the efforts made by UNESCO and its Member States in the field of disaster management. The experts from Morocco and Ghana introduced the results and significance of the assistance programmes that Japan has implemented through UNESCO.
 
     In his opening remarks, Ambassador Kano expressed his condolences to the victims of the recent earthquake in Myanmar and his expectations for further efforts based on UNESCO's broad role in sciences, education and culture to build a resilient society against various natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods and tsunamis.
 
     During an exchange of views with the audience, Ambassador of Myanmar expressed his gratitude for the support from the international community and his appreciation for Japan's long-standing international leadership in the field of disaster management.
