20 November 2025: Japan’s Election as a Member of the Executive Board and as its Vice Chairperson, Election Results for Subsidiary Organs of the General Conference of UNESCO

On 7 November, during the 43rd session of the General Conference of UNESCO, the elections to the Executive Board for the term 2025–2029 were held, and Japan was re-elected as a member of the Board.
Furthermore, on 20 November, the 223rd session of the UNESCO Executive Board was convened, during which the Chairperson and Vice Chairpersons (one from each of the six electoral groups) were elected. Japan stood as the candidate representing the Asia-Pacific Group (ASPAC) for the position of Vice Chairperson of the Executive Board and was elected unanimously by acclamation. Japan will serve as Vice Chairperson of the Executive Board from 2025 to 2027.
Japan has continuously served as a member of the Executive Board since 1952 and will continue to make active contributions to UNESCO’s work.
In addition, on 10 November, elections for the subsidiary organs of the General Conference were held during the 43rd session. Japan stood for the following Committees and Councils and was elected to all of them without a vote:
• Legal Committee (LEG)
• Headquarters Committee (HQC)
• Intergovernmental Council of the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP)
• International Co-ordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB)
• Intergovernmental Council of the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC)
