17 February 2026: Japan Announces FY2025 Supplementary Budget Contribution to Support UNESCO Projects

On 17 February, at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, Ambassador KANO Takehiro, Permanent Delegate of Japan to UNESCO, presented to UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany a list of seventeen UNESCO projects to be supported through Japan’s FY2025 supplementary budget.
The total amount of this supplementary budget contribution is approximately 1.036 billion Japanese yen (7 million US dollars). Through this funding, Japan will support UNESCO projects in the fields of education, culture, science, information and communication in twenty-one countries and regions, including Ukraine, Palestine, countries in Africa, as well as the Arab region and Asia.
Ambassador Kano noted that this contribution was decided in the commemorative year marking the 75th anniversary of Japan’s accession to UNESCO and reflects Japan’s high expectations for the new leadership of Director-General El-Enany. He also expressed Japan’s strong hope that the funds will be utilized in an effective and meaningful manner.
Ambassador Kano further informed that Japan has contributed approximately 2.3 million US dollars in voluntary contributions for FY2025 to the “Japan Funds-in-Trust for UNESCO’s programmes”. With this contribution, ten projects are currently under preparation, including initiatives for cultural heritage conservation and disaster risk reduction in countries such as Syria and Lebanon. He also noted that Japan plans to support the preservation of UNESCO’s archives.
Upon receiving the list, Director-General El-Enany expressed his appreciation for Japan’s unwavering support and indicated his intention to ensure that this contribution will be utilized in an efficient and effective manner.
