On March 12, Ambassador Kano hosted a screening event of the documentary film “Pionnières au Japon” by French director Mathieu Despiau, at the Maison de la Culture du Japon à Paris (MCJP). The film tells the story of former French football player Laure Boulleau, who meets, through her travel to Japan, Japanese women who are boldly taking on traditional Japanese professions—such as sumo wrestlers, sushi chefs, and sake brewers—that have traditionally been considered male-dominated. At the screening, Ambassador Kano delivered opening remarks, followed by remarks from film director Mathieu Despiau, the film’s protagonist Laure Boulleau, and sushi chef Yuki Chidui, who also appears in the film.

At the reception, sushi chef Yuki Chidui gave a demonstration of making salmon sushi, as participants engaged in an exchange of views on gender equality, one of UNESCO’s key mandates, in the presence of staff from the UNESCO Secretariat and representatives of Permanent Delegations of various countries.
