23–24 March 2026: Lectures on Japanese Calligraphy by Calligrapher TSUCHIHASHI Yasuko
2026/3/23
On March 23 at the Maison de la Culture du Japon à Paris (MCJP) and on March 24 at his Residence, Ambassador Kano hosted a lecture on Japanese Calligraphy by renowned Calligrapher TSUCHIHASHI Yasuko, who was invited specially from Japan. Under the title “The Tradition and Charm of Calligraphy,” Ms. Tsuchihashi spoke about various aspects of Calligraphy, including the Japanese aesthetic sense that finds beauty in asymmetry and blank space; the spirit of valuing harmony (wa), which aligns with UNESCO’s philosophy of seeking peace, and introduced Calligraphy as both a part of daily life and a form of art.
In addition to an exhibition of works brought from Japan by Ms. Tsuchihashi, a Calligraphy demonstration was held during the lectures, providing attendees with a valuable opportunity to witness Calligraphy up close. On both days, a reception followed the lecture, serving as an opportunity for exchanging views on calligraphy and intangible cultural heritage in general.
Japanese Calligraphy is scheduled to be reviewed for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity at the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, to be held in Xiamen, China, from 30 November to 5 December 2026.
