On May 4, Ambassador Kano attended the “World Press Freedom Day” conference held in Lusaka, Zambia, where he delivered opening remarks and participated in a panel discussion on the themes of media viability and pluralism.

UNESCO designates May 3 as “World Press Freedom Day” to recognize the commitment to press freedom around the world, and holds international meetings around that date involving stakeholders from the media, governments, and international organizations. This theme for this year was “Shaping a Future at Peace, Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security.”

In his opening remarks and during the panel discussion, Ambassador Kano emphasized the significance of this year’s theme in light of the challenging international situation surrounding freedom of expression. As Chair of the Intergovernmental Council of the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) since last December, Ambassador Kano outlined the role the IPDC has played, highlighted new challenges arising from advancements in artificial intelligence and other developments, and shared his vision for future activities, calling for further support for the IPDC’s work.
