26 July 2026: The inscription of “Ancient Capitals of Asuka and Fujiwara” on UNESCO’s World Heritage List

1 On July 26 at the 48th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, the site “Ancient Capitals of Asuka and Fujiwara”, nominated by Japan, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
2 The site“Ancient Capitals of Asuka and Fujiwara” is a precious cultural heritage that demonstrates, through the transition of ancient capitals across two successive periods, the process by which a centralized state system emerged and developed during the formative era of ancient states in East Asia, through close exchanges with the Korean Peninsula and the continent. Japan warmly welcomes the inscription of this property on the World Heritage List, and hopes that it will attract greater global attention to its value as testimony to the formation of ancient states in East Asia.
3 The Permanent Delegation of Japan to UNESCO expresses its deep appreciation to all members of the World Heritage Committee, the UNESCO Secretariat and the members of ICOMOS for their kind cooperation towards the inscription, based on their understanding of the property’s Outstanding Universal Value. We will continue to make efforts to promote worldwide understanding of the value of Japan’s World Heritage sites.
