16 February 2024: Japan's support to Morocco through UNESCO

2024/2/16
As of 16 February, the Permanent Mission of Japan to UNESCO signed a document with UNESCO committing Japan to contribute approximately USD 900,000 (approximately JPY 120 million) from the 2023 supplementary budget to support UNESCO's efforts in the field of earthquake disaster prevention in Morocco.

The assistance will target the provinces of Al Haouz, Marrakech, Taroudant and Ouarzazate, among the areas affected by the earthquake that struck Morocco on 8 September 2023, and will strengthen earthquake observation and early warning as part of efforts to strengthen Morocco's resilience against earthquakes. Training in seismic design for engineers is also planned.

UNESCO is one of the few UN agencies working on earthquake disaster risk reduction and has established a strong network of research institutes and private companies in various countries, including Japan. Japan will continue to work with UNESCO to ensure that Japanese assistance, with its high level of knowledge in earthquake disaster risk reduction (DRR), strengthens Morocco's resilience to earthquake disasters and enables it to rebuild back better.
