21-29 August 2006 : Visit of the Director-General of UNESCO to Japan

Mr Koïchiro MATSUURA, Director-General of UNESCO, undertook an official visit to Japan from 21 to 29 August 2006 to participate in the Fourth Annual Conference on Issues of Globalization. This conference was co-organized by UNESCO and the United Nations University (UNU) in Tokyo .

 

The conference aimed at exploring more efficient and dynamic approaches towards harnessing scientific and technological progress for the promotion of peace and sustainable development. Mr Matsuura opened the conference.

 

During his visit, the Director-General was received by the Emperor and Empress of Japan, the Prime Minister of Japan, several members of the Japanese Government and high personalities of Japan 's institutional life. He expressed his gratitude for Japan 's strong support to UNESCO's activities and programme.

 

On the occasion of this stay, Mr Matsuura designated Japanese composer Missa Johnouchi "UNESCO Artist for Peace", and he attended a ceremony celebrating the designation of Kabuki as a UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
