June 2005 : Intercultural Dialogue – Publication of the Proceedings of the Symposium “Cultural Diversity and Globalization, the Arab-Japanese Experience, a Cross-Regional Dialogue”

 

The proceedings of the International Symposium “Cultural Diversity and Globalization, the Arab-Japanese Experience, a Cross-Regional Dialogue” organized on 6 and 7 May 2004 by the Culture Sector of UNESCO with the support of the Japan Foundation and in partnership with the Permanent Delegation of Japan and the Arab Group of UNESCO, have just been published. This symposium, which gathered numerous researchers and specialists on the themes of modernity, modernization and cultural diversity, was an opportunity to strengthen the friendly relations between Japan and the Arab world and to reflect on the significance of cultural identity and opening up to other cultures.

The calligraphers Master Hassan Massoudy (Iraq) and Master Shingai Tanaka (Japan) have honoured the symposium with their presence. They created the visual of the symposium (the word “Dialogue” calligraphed in Japanese and Arabic) and made a demonstration of their art during the symposium.

An Exhibition of photographs by Mamdouh Anwar entitled “Timeless images and scenes from everyday life” drawing a parallel between scenes taken in Japan and in Arab countries, was on display during the symposium.

 

Photographs taken during the symposium and the calligraphy demonstrations as well as selected extracts of the exhibition are also presented in the proceedings (p. 73 to 80).

 

On 6 May 2004, Mr Teiichi Sato, Permanent Delegate of Japan to UNESCO (until September 2006) opened the above symposium with a speech.

 

On 7 May 2004, Mr Seiichi Kondo, now Permanent Delegate of Japan to UNESCO (since September 2006) closed the above symposium with a speech.
