World Heritage and Intangible Cultural Heritage in Japan

 

The World Heritage List of UNESCO includes 14 cultural and natural properties of Japan, considered by the World Heritage Committee as having outstanding universal value.

 

18 cultural expressions of Japan have also been inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

 

Cultural and natural heritage:

 

The UNESCO World Heritage sites in Japan are, in alphabetical order:

 

 

 

 

 

the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities) (1994), the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara (1998), the Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama (1995), Itsukushima Shinto Shrine (1996), Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine and its Cultural Landscape (2007), the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range (2004), Shirakami-Sanchi (1993), Shiretoko (2005), the Shrines and Temples of Nikko (1999), Yakushima (1993)

 

Intangible Heritage:

 

The Japanese intangible heritage elements inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity proclaimed by UNESCO are: Bunraku, Kabuki, Nogaku (Noh and Kyogen) (2008), Akiu no Taue Odori , Chakkirako , Daimokutate , Dainichido Bugaku , Gagaku , Hayachine Kagura , Hitachi Furyumono , Koshikijima no Toshidon , Ojiya-chijimi, Echigo-jofu: techniques of making ramie fabric in Uonuma region, Niigata Prefecture , Oku-noto no Aenokoto , Sekishu-Banshi: papermaking in the Iwami region of Shimane Prefecture , Traditional Ainu dance , Yamahoko, the float ceremony of the Kyoto Gion festival (2009) , Kumiodori, traditional Okinawan musical theatre and Yuki-tsumugi, silk fabric production technique (2010)
